How I Built a Stage-Winning Back: Inside the Complete 12-Week System

A back that reads on stage isn't built by rows alone. It's built by understanding width, thickness, and the exact angles that create detail under the lights.

A wide, detailed back is one of the most recognisable parts of my physique on stage — and it's also one of the most misunderstood muscle groups to train. Most lifters default to heavy rows and call it a back day. That builds thickness, maybe. It doesn't build the width, the taper, or the separation that actually reads from the judging panel.

This is the exact 12-week PPL system I used heading into the 2026 season to build the back behind that physique. It's structured in phases for a reason: width has to be built before detail can show up on top of it, and thickness work has to be sequenced so it doesn't interfere with the pulling patterns that create taper.

Exercise selection matters more here than almost any other muscle group. The angle of a pulldown, the path of a row, the position of your elbows relative to your torso — small adjustments change which fibers actually get recruited. This program isn't a list of back exercises. It's the specific selection, angles, and sequencing that took my back from average to one of the most recognised in Men's Physique.

The sessions are high-intensity and built for lifters who are past the beginner stage and ready to stop guessing at exercise selection and start training with an actual system behind it.

If your back has plateaued or you've never had a real structure behind how you train it, this is the exact program that changed mine.
